Iceland’s Golden Circle is a must-see for any traveller, as it boasts some of the most incredible and awe-inspiring landscapes in the world. From the spouting geysers of Geysir to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, the Golden Circle in Iceland is full of amazing sights. In this blog post, we’ll explore 5 of the most jaw-dropping landscapes in the Golden Circle you have to see to believe.

Geysir Geothermal Area

Located in the Haukadalur Valley of southwest Iceland, Geysir Geothermal Area is a one-of-a-kind natural wonder. Home to the world-famous Strokkur geyser, this area of Iceland is an absolute must-see when visiting the Golden Circle. Strokkur erupts every five minutes, shooting up to 30 metres high and providing mesmerising views. You can also see boiling mud pits, sulphur springs, and steaming hot pools all around the area. Moreover, you’ll also be surrounded by breathtaking scenery that’s sure to take your breath away.

Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National Park is an incredible natural area in the Golden Circle. Located between two tectonic plates, Thingvellir National Park is a place that will appeal to lovers of natural beauty: it offers gorgeous landscapes and there are trails for hiking and camping beside Lake Thingvallavatn, one of the largest natural lakes in Iceland. Other attractions in Thingvellir National Park include magnificent waterfalls like Gullfoss and Geysir, as well as Þingvellir Church which was built in the 19th century.

Gullfoss Waterfall

One of the most impressive sights in the Golden Circle is Gullfoss Waterfall. Located in the canyon of the Hvítá River, Gullfoss translates to "Golden Falls" in Icelandic and is one of the country's most iconic waterfalls. Gullfoss is a double-tiered waterfall, with an upper and lower tier, each measuring 32 feet in height. When the Hvítá River reaches the canyon, it roars over the two-tier cascade before flowing into a massive pool at the bottom. For those who'd like to explore further, a short hike takes you to Langjökull glacier which offers incredible views of this spectacular landscape.

Kerið Volcanic Crater

Kerið Volcanic Crater is one of the most unique and mesmerising sites located in Iceland’s Golden Circle. It is a spectacularly colourful crater that was formed by a volcanic eruption more than 6,500 years ago. The crater itself is an impressive site to behold; it is striking 180 m wide and 55 m deep with its unique shape created from the lip of the crater wall. The floor of the crater has stunning turquoise-coloured water from the minerals found in the soil.

Secret Lagoon

Located in the small village of Flúðir, Secret Lagoon is a natural hot spring that offers visitors an amazing outdoor experience. This is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland and it offers a unique experience of soaking in a natural hot spring while surrounded by nature. The water in the pool comes from a geothermal spring, heated naturally by underground volcanic activity. The temperature of the water averages around 38-40 degrees Celsius, making it perfect for swimming. The Secret Lagoon is surrounded by breathtaking views of stunning mountains and lush vegetation, making it one of the most beautiful places in the Golden Circle.
