Zurriola beach, excellent sand, plenty of it and pretty good waves.

Why use Zurriola Beach?

Zurriola was a delightful surprise, after the beauty and style of La Concha we had expected to be unimpressed  but it definitely had its own ambience, young and challenging, a place to fight the sea, not float in a sunstruck daze.
There were plenty of people there who could easily have been over on Concha or Ondarreta – Concha is less than 10 minutes walk away – but chose a battle and clearly loved it.

Romance over  Zurriola.

Zurriola sand is spacious and soft and the promenade just as pleasant as La Concha, while the facilities are equally all-encompassing.

Those grotesque buildings in the background are the Kursaal Conference Centre (Palacio de Congresos Centro Kursaal) that look hideous and out of place in the daytime but change dramatically at night when the interior lights go on inside the translucent walls.

Zurriola’s water-usage separation (on the days we visited anyway) was clearly defined:
swimmers kept to the far left where they were partially protected by the curving breakwater.
• amateur surfers and learners used the central section of the bay.
• The far right was the domain of experienced surfers

Even little girls taking lessons were not intimidated by the quite hefty surf and the instructor was totally cool.

Over on the breakwater side life is a lot calmer.
