USA, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Summerfest – also know as ‘the Big Gig’ – is the world’s largest musical jamboree, attracting one million people. Held annually for 11 days either side of Independence Day weekend, though NOT on Monday July 3, with more than 1,000 performances on 11 stages. 2017 is going to be the festival’s 50th edition!

28 June – 8 July

CANADA, Montreal International Jazz Festival. Free outdoor megashows as well as indoor performances.

24 June – 1 July

DENMARK, Roskilde Festival– one of Europe’s five largest rock music festivals, has been running since 1971. It has been played by countless big artists in the past including Bob Marley, U2, Metallica and Radiohead.

ICELAND, Keflavik, ATP All tomorrow’s Parties at Asbrú, the former NATO base – a fan-friendly art/film/music event where everyone gets to hang out with each other each morning and night. ATP is known for its unpredictable and exciting line-ups. The concept is expanding from London to venues in Australia, US and Spain. Iceland photos.

SWITZERLAND, Zurich Festival – international artists perform drama, music, ballet and opera. Also Zurich Pride Festival and Parade is held in June.

FRANCE, Aix-en-Provence, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence – International Festival of Lyric Art , a popular summer arts festival, especially for classical music.

USA, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Santa Fe Opera – a brilliant series of shows in a superb new opera house.

7 – 16 July

DENMARK, Copenhagen Copenhagen Jazz Festival – an annual jazz event, held in the capital since 1979, with more than 1000 concerts during the week.

30 June – 15 July

SWITZERLAND, Montreux Jazz Festival – all sorts of non-classical music featured, in spite of the name, in an appealing location on the shore of Lake Geneva in Montreux.

1 – 3 July

COLOMBIA, Bogota, Rock al Parque – ‘Rock in the Park’ festival is South America’s biggest music event with some of the great names in rock and FREE of entry charge!

7 July – 4 Aug

FINLAND, Savonlinna Opera Festival – a grand classical celebration in the Finnish lake district, set in magnificent 15th Century St Olaf’s Castle.

6 – 26 July

FRANCE, Avignon, Festival d’Avignon, a dynamic and diverse Arts festival, boasting over 50 productions and many more fringes in this stunning historic city. Avignon Photos.

TUNISIA, International Carthage Festival in Tunis, the country’s biggest arts event, mixing local and international sounds in the old Roman amphitheatre.

7 – 9 July

NETHERLANDS (HOLLAND), Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival – perhaps the biggest jazz gathering in the world with over 20, 000 visitors a day and lots of big name acts. Rotterdam Pictures

8 July

ENGLAND, Milton Keynes, Electronic Daisy Carnival (EDC) will take place at the National Bowl – a huge electronic dance music festival held outdoors, this is the biggest organised rave in the world. EDC is driven by DJs and massive sounds systems along with extraordinary lighting effects including fireworks. Note that many participants wear appropriately wild and outrageous outfits. Weird is good. This is not a band/artist/musician event. Only DJs, but the best in the world. Currently EDC happens in Las Vegas, New York and UK.

6 – 9 July

SERBIA, Novi Sad, EXIT Festival – an up and coming summer music event, originally started by university studentsin 2000. Annually staged in the grounds of impressive Petrovaradin Fortress, this laid-back festival is becoming one of the most popular European youth events.

13 – 16 July

ENGLAND, Latitude, held annually at Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk, – an arts festival for everyone from music to comedy, movie to literature. It is run by the same company runs the popular Leeds Festival and Reading Festival.

14 – 16 July

CANADA, Vancouver Folk Music Festival – A 3-day festival featuring a mix of folk music from around the world at Jericho Beach Park in the heart of the city. The Festival features music on eight stages, children’s activities, craft and food and characterizes the laid-back attitude and style of Vancouver.

AUSTRIA, Salzburger Festspiele (Salzburg Festival) – opera and concerts. ‘Europe’s most prestigious summer musical event. ‘ Very large, very expensive. Every year in Mozart’s pretty home town of Salzburg. Austria Guide

SWITZERLAND, Paléo Festival Nyon – the biggest open-air festival in Switzerland and one of Europe’s fast growing, very popular outdoor music events.

ENGLAND, Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire WOMAD UK – (World of Music Arts and Dance) impressive world music festival, with 70 artists from 30 countries on 7 stages. Family friendly.

14 July – 19

ITALY, Puccini Festival – the world’s only annual opera festival dedicated to the works of the great composer Giacomo Puccini. At an open-air theatre located in Torre del Lago, near Lucca, Puccini’s birth place.

JAPAN, Fuji Rock Festival – Japan’s largest outdoor live concert takes place for 3 days at the scenic Naeba ski resort every summer.

USA, North Carolina, Wilmington, Cape Fear Blues Festival. An annual 3 day blues fiesta in venues across the city, including Saturday’s big concert at the Legion Stadium.

25 July – 28 Aug

GERMANY, Wagner Festival (Bayeruther Festspiele) at Bayreuth – very expensive and elitist, held in the unusual theatre that Wagner built.

29 July – 15

FRANCE, Marciac International Jazz Festival, one of the world’s finest jazz festivals annually held in the charming medieval town of Marciac southwest of France, where Jazz is taught as a routine subject in local schools. Many free events throughout town.

27 – 30 July

ENGLAND, Cambridge, Cambridge Folk Festival – one of world’s longest running folk events – the real deal for the folks who like the music. ‘A festival with a prestigious reputation for quality music in intimate surroundings’ in Cherry Hinton Hall. Family friendly.

3 – 6 August

USA, Chicago, Illinois, Lollapalooza (which means an extraordinary event) – an eclectic musical celebration held in Grant Park annually. It offers a wide range of sounds including punk, heavy metal, alternative rock and hip pop. This is considered to be one of the world’s most eco-friendly events.
