2018 Exotic Festivals May Listing

 World Festival dates and information

Takayama Festiva, Japan

Borobudur temple on Vesak day. Indonesia. 29 May 2018.

These listings are mostly about odd events in Exotic Places. Generally we do not list European or English Speaking festivals here – unless they are exceptionally alien!

Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month, starts 16 May 2018 depending on location and runs to 15 June. There’s often a lively feast day, Eid al-Fitr, at the end of Ramadan on June 15, though the celebration/holiday begins at sunset of the previous day.

Calendar Dates are sometimes unconfirmed and occasionally unreliable, so check before booking. TBC/A = To Be Confirmed/Announced

INDONESIA, Vesak (Waisak) Festival also known as Buddha Purnima (a holy day for Buddhist as Buddha’s birth and death- the enlightenment day) at Borobudur temple in Java, the world’s largest Buddhist structure. Vesak is celebrated in many other countries mainly in Asia such as India, China , Japan and Thailand but the date varied.

19 – 23 May

CHINA, Cheung Chau Bun Festival on Cheung Chau Island, Hong Kong. Yes, real, edible buns treated with enormous pomp on this fishing island, with sky-high bun towers, bun parades and something to eat too. It coincides with the Buddha’s Birthday celebration. Hong Kong Guide

MOROCCO, Fez Festival of World Sacred Music (Fès Musiques Sacrées du Monde), in Fes (Fez) – not at all tediously spiritual. Wide ranging music from Spanish gypsy laments to Sufi chanting in a perfectly evocative location in Morocco
