From the capital San Jose, we travel overland and by boat to Tortuguero National Park, home to nesting turtles. Then to La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano, where a volcano walk gives us the chance to watch the flowing molten lava and relax in hot natural springs. Here optional activities abound – inflatable kayaking, whitewater rafting, biking and even safari floats are all on offer. We take a horseback ride along Lake Arenal to Monteverde in the midst of the cloudforest, where we swing through the treetops on a canopy zipline.
