Wildlife safari July. Months/locations are chosen on the strength of :

• The weather,  as wet weather often means animals will shelter while long spells of rain stimulate growth of vegetation that hides to creatures, especially out in the great plains of East and South Africa. In Namibia rain means the wildlife does not have to rely on waterholes near to rest camps. So…dry seasons are best for safaris!

• The frequency of animal sightings generally, especially the Big Five in Africa (lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros),  the tiger in India and so on. Bugbog crew has been to most of these locations.

Self-drive or guided tour?

Note that in some locations you can get along pretty well by yourself, whether it’s walking or self-drive (e.g. Kruger in South Africa, Etosha in Namibia). But in some places you need not just a safari guide but a good safari guide who is pleasant, informative and knows where the beasts are/will be. Preferably without dozens of other tourists in the same place (e.g. Kenya, Amazon, Borneo).

Serengeti and Ngorongoro, Tanzania.
Monster safari parks with a huge diversity of animals. Best December-February, June-September with Serengetti wildbeeste and zebra migration around July/August. Worst time: March-May (rains).

Big game safari

Masai Mara, Kenya.
Huge numbers of animals scattered across a spacious savannah. Too many tourists, but very good wildlife access. Best July-September for wildebeest migration or for great weather December-March. Avoid April-June ( heavy rain).

Bears fishing for salmon

Alaska (far north USA):
If you enjoy the unspoilt outdoors and want to wander in wonder among forests of snowy peaks, glassy fjords, crystal lakes and rivers jumping with salmon-fishing bears, then a summer trip to Alaska could be the place for you.
At this time there are also plenty of moose, deer, wolves, whales and other marine lifeforms.
Best July-September. Early September provides best weather, best prices and least trouble booking things.

Big for game, deserts, and dunes

Etosha National Park, Namibia.
Etosha hosts shuffling hordes of wildlife and permits easy viewing from three tourist camps at the centre of the action.
The Skeleton Coast offers the bleak, Cape Cross colony of 100, 000 seals. Best June-September, OK May, October.

Rwanda – Parc National de Volcans and Uganda – Mgahinga National Park.
Mountain gorilla treks with much damp climbing and only one hour to visit with the hairy fellas but it’ll be an unforgettable moment in time. Best in January, February, June, July.

Orang utang Rehabilitation Centre

Kabili Sepilok Forest, Kalimantan, Malaysia.
Playing hide-and-seek with semi-wild orange critters through an ancient rainforest. Other animals range from monkeys to monitor lizards. Best July-October.

Polar life

Churchill, Hudson Bay, Northern Canada.
Excellent bleak scenery and cool animals – polar bears, caribou, wolves, whales and seabirds. Best March – November, especially October/November for polar bear migration. Avoid the rest of the year.

Wildlife safari

Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana
Much of the Okavango Delta, with diverse habitats. Accommodation levels are high as are costs. Transport is frequently by boat and all the big five animals should be present as well as thousands of migratory birds. Best July-October or November – March for bird watching.

Self-drive wildlife safari

Kruger Park, South Africa.
Kruger provides well-organised self-drive safari possibilities (no 4WD necessary) and many comfortable places to stay inside the wildlife zone, but book ahead.
Best June-September. OK May-October.

Dolphins

Bimini island, Bahamas.
Just off Florida little Bimini is a place to swim with wild dolphins that have taken up residence about an hour offshore. Best May-July but winter with wetsuits is OK.

Wildlife on foot safaris

South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
This huge and undeveloped country specialises in walking safaris that permit tourists to enjoy a wide range of animals safely without having to bump around in a 4×4. Best October, good July – September. and June for bird watching. Avoid November – April (rains).

Chimpanzees

Uganda – Kibale Forest or Budongo Forest. Tanzania – Gombe Stream or Mahale Mountains for animal tracking.
Best June – September. Avoid March-May, October, November.

Wet wildlife

The Pantanal, Brazil.
A vast wetland buzzing with more wild things than the Amazon, especially birds, snakes, crocodiles, iguanas, anteaters and more. Best July-October. Avoid December-May (rains).
