Big game safari: Masai Mara, Kenya. Huge numbers of animals scattered across a spacious savannah. Too many tourists, but very good wildlife access. Best July-September for wildebeest migration or for great weather December-March. Avoid April-June [ heavy rain]. Kenya Safari Pictures | Africa Map

Big game safari:
Serengetti, Tanzania. A monster of a safari park with a huge diversity of animals.
Best in June/July at wildebeest and zebra migration. Good also August-October and December - February. Avoid March-May [rains].
However, Ngorongoro Crater is better than Serengetti if you're not on a migration tour. Best July-Oct. Worst March-May. Also Selous Game Reserve in South Tanzania is worth checking if you would prefer walking with animals rather than driving around them. Best and Worst as above. Big for game, deserts, and dunes: Etosha National Park, Namibia. Etosha is home to grunting masses of animals of all sorts with three fortified tourist camps in the middle of this rampant wildlife.

Gorillas: Rwanda - Parc National de Volcans and Uganda - Mgahinga National Park. Mountain gorilla treks with much damp climbing and only one hour to visit with the hairy chaps but it'll be an unforgettable 60 minutes. Best in Jan, Feb, June, July. Orang utang Rehabilitation Centre, Kabili Sepilok Forest, Kalimantan, Malaysia. playing hide-and-seek with semi-wild orange critters through an ancient rainforest. Other animals range from monkeys to monitor lizards. Best July-Oct. Malaysia Pictures

Polar life, Arctic: Churchill, Hudson Bay, Northern Canada. Excellent arctic scenery and cool animals - polar bears, caribou, wolves, whales and seabirds. Best March - Nov, especially October for polar bear migration. Avoid the rest of the year. More tourist information | Canada pictures

Wildlife safari: Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana, much of the Okavango Delta, with diverse habitats. Accommodation levels are high as are costs. Transport is frequently by boat and all the big five animals should be present as well as thousands of migratory birds. Best July-October or November - March for bird watching. Self-drive wildlife safari: Kruger Park, South Africa. Other than the elephantine size of this animal sanctuary, what makes Kruger special is ease of self-drive and the substantial choice of places to stay inside the wildlife area.

Dolphins: Bimini island, Bahamas. Just off Florida little Bimini is a place to swim with wild dolphins that have taken up residence about an hour offshore. Best May-July but winter with wetsuits is OK.

Wildlife on foot safaris: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. This massive but undeveloped country specialises in walking safaris that enable tourists to enjoy a wide range of animals safely without having to bump around in a 4x4.
