New Zealand is also birthplace to many borderline-insane adrenalin activities, embraces excellent beaches, and is is small enough to travel around in a couple of weeks, not expensive (there's no shortage of budget accommodation) and English speaking. And the natives are friendly!
However...sand flies (tiny bloodsuckers) are common, and not only in sand.
