Previously known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka has a modern industrial economy and the highest per capita income in South Asia, efficiently producing tea, coffee, coconuts and rubber for export, as well as welcoming tourists to their lush tropical forests, huge sandy beaches, fine ancient monuments and hilly landscapes.

Sri Lankans are quite similar and related to south Indian people, with a rich culture and friendly nature. The country is still, however, battling with a violent Tamil independence movement in the north of Sri Lanka and recovering from the devastating 2004 tsunami.
