Why travel in Jordan?

Jordan is home to friendly and welcoming people, and while it's history is huge the country is quite small, easy to travel around and low cost if you avoid the classic tourist hotels.
Sights are spectacular: Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash and the Dead Sea make a great short tour, while self drive is not at all difficult, nor is crossing from Israel (depending on whatever's going on that month!).

However, Jordan's desert is flat and drab other than the extraordinary bits around Wadi Rum and Petra, while the capital Amman and port of Aquaba are dull and tourist infrastructure is undeveloped.
