A mere 50 years since the Cultural Revolution, China has transformed itself into the world's biggest factory, a big importer, bigger exporter and huge economic success story.

China was the greatest economy in the world for 18 out of the last 20 centuries and will be again before the middle of this century - in size if not in wealth per capita.

This is not yet a superpower but China is a leading actor on the world stage and a good performance will be required if the audience of 6 billion or so is to be satisfied.

Of course, in addition to world affairs the Chinese have a long list of domestic issues to resolve, including minorities such as Tibetans, urbanisation - Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong are already over-extended, environment management and political development, but the future looks bright, though - Cultural Revolution apart - important changes don't happen overnight in China, centre of the world
