Why holiday in Mali?

Mali, hot, dusty and very African, is dotted with bleak deserts and bizarre mud buildings decorated in a crude but inventive animist style and peopled with bright and laid-back locals.

Tourist mainly go to Mali either for spectacular treks along the Bandiagara Escarpment with its rural mud villages and distinctive granaries, for camel treks to and around the ghostly Saharan town of Timbuktu or for simple canoe cruises up the River Niger.

The December cattle crossing festival is a particularly good time to be in Mali, or April for the masked dance festival.
