Especially well organised students will be wanting to plan their Gap Year as much as possible now. Outstanding! If you intend staying in education beyond the Sixth Form read on and add a year for your 2008/2009 application preparation. Students in the UK wishing to get on a course at a university or college in the USA in 2009 will need to apply 9-12 months before study through The Fulbright Commission's US Educational Advisory Service, see www.fulbright.co.uk. |

The pressure is on to decide what to do directly after school, for some it will be straight into work, for others on to further or higher education, but will you Gap first? You apply for a higher education course through UCAS [the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service], see www.ucas.com. If you have decided to go on to further or higher education it is essential to find out how your future educators feel about Gap Years. There are three ways of getting to Gap between school and your intended course. 1.
Deferred Entry - you prearrange with the institution that you
will turn up one year later than usual for the course (ie 2009)
- some courses will allow this, and some will not, but if they
do you should have a good answer on tap for what you will do with
the time and why you want to do it. 2. Rescheduled Entry - a tricky one if you are serious about your Gap Year as it relies on you getting an offer and the required exam results to accept it, and then requesting a change of your course entry date. You may end up in a worst case scenario of having to decide between first and second choice course offers and your Gap Year. 3. Post Results Application (Clearing) - once you have your exam results you can still apply via the Clearing system if you have no course to go on for a 2008 start, or you can enter the 2008/2009 round of applications for entrance in 2009, an instant Gap Year! |

Those who wish to study Medicine or Veterinary Medicine or who wish to apply for Oxford or Cambridge universities, as well as all medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and veterinary science courses beginning in 2008 (and also for deferred entry to these courses in 2008), must return their forms to UCAS by 15th October 2007. |
| January 2008 | Everyone else (except some art and design students, check with UCAS) will have to get their applications in between 1st September 2007 and 15th January 2008. Send your form off as quickly as you can, it shows you are well organised as well as bright. |

Offers will hopefully start coming in as either an unconditional offer or a conditional offer. When you get one, check with the relevant university or college that it is correct, as they have no responsibility to give you a place if UCAS make a clerical error. If you still haven't got your form off you can apply through Clearing - a rather hit and miss process which hands out the left over places. |

Exam results are in! Yeaaaaah! You made it and life is going to plan, Gap Year or course here you come! Aaaaargh! Oooops, you've got to take something again or didn't make the grades. Don't Panic! Life's bigger than exams. Here's the emergency procedure: 1. If you were close to getting an offer, don't give up on it yet. Get through to the course leader if possible [die hards will visit in person] and plead your case, but if you weren't close, then even a silver tongue won't help, so try through Clearing or next year's applications [there's your Gap Year just turned up again!]. 2. If you failed something or wish to get better results [get advice, second time round usually means the entry requirements go up] then you need to retake. Unfortunately most retakes mean a no no for a pre-course Gap Year because let's face it, unless you failed an exam due to illness you'll need to study some more - but it's okay, you could still take a Gap Year after the course, or even during it, unless you were really lucky and ... ... you failed a language! There's no better way to learn a language, than to stay somewhere where you have to speak it all the time. Yippee! Your Gap Year just turned up again! |
