Route
12, running conveniently from Bryce Canyon National Park north to
Capitol Reef National Park is one of the most striking roads
in the USA, competing mainly with the Big Sur Coast's Pacific Coast Highway, 90
miles of wild seas and cliffs part way between LA and San Francisco.
Route 12, however, is overshadowed by the road that heads east out
of Capitol Reef on the way to Arches National Park.
Route 24, a stretch
of asphalt lined with extraordinary chunks of rock that would be major
attractions in any other country and draw gaping crowds, but are simply
more roadside relics in USA's Utah.
Here are just a few of the best sights along Route 12 and Route 24
roads, starting near Bryce Canyon and ending near Green River - a
few miles from Arches NP.

A part of Dixie National Forest along Route 12 (SR-12, Scenic Byway) in Boulder, Utah.
This
is the last section of Route 12 before the road passes through Capitol
Reef and morphs into Route 24. The road through the park is free
of charge.
Capitol Reef NP is well worth a drive-thru if time permits, with some
stunning multicoloured rocks and good walks. The Park also has an
attractive camp site.

Route 24, between Caineville and Hanksville, Utah.

Near Factory Butte, Route 24 between Caineville and Hanksville.

Factory Butte (pronounced bute for non Americans), Caineville to Hanksville.

Route 24 Fremont petroglyphs, just outside Capitol Reef.
Through
the Fremont River canyon, immediately on leaving the Capitol Reef
National Park and by the roadside are these curious
rock drawings of bighorn sheep and space travellers, in the region
of 1,000 years old.
Make of them what you will...Aliens enjoy a good
lamb chop? Bighorn sheep kept spacemen as pets? Fremont was the site
of USA's first moon shot?
Ken Kesey and his acid crew passed by here
in the 70's and took time out to sketch their dreams? Your turn now...

The Navajo Dome left and Capitol Dome right, Route 24 through Capitol Reef NP.
Near Goblin Valley and not long before Green River town, Utah.
