Many Burners favourite experience came from walking or biking late at night across the centre of the Playa, looking over to the strobing colours and thumping sounds coming from the distant playground of Psyche's Esplanade, when suddenly - Wooosh! - a 20ft neon snail slides by silently at high speed. Yow! The Passages art work. This sculpture, Passages, by Dan Das Man and Karen Cusolito, was a hugely complex and impressive, combining metal trash, fire and water. This and other night pictures were hand held with no flash, so please excuse the blur. Still, the fuzziness conveys the state that many participants were in.... A conflagration of Mutant Vehicles. Art cars and mutant machines of every twisted sort cruised the Playa and streets of Psyche at night, mostly packed with monster sound systems, raving dancers and lit by gouts of flame. The flame spouting, well-mirror-hung, Winnebago of Willies. This Ship of Fools didn't seem to move much but looked terrific stationary. The Cheshire Cat was superbly built and intricately detailed.
