Apamea

Syria, Apamea

Apamea's 2km long cardo or main street.

Another collection of fantastic ruins - but this time on high grassland - thanks to the Romans and dating mainly from 115 AD, this town once supported 500,000 inhabitants and was visited by such luminaries as Anthony and his mate Cleopatra. Apamea was captured by the usual suspects from 450 AD - Persians, Muslims, Christians and then Muslims again, but the worst and terminal damage was caused by mother nature when an earthquake flattened the city and made it uninhabitable.
