Apamea's
2km long cardo or main street.
Another
collection of fantastic ruins - but this time on high grassland -
thanks to the Romans and dating mainly from 115 AD, this town once
supported 500,000 inhabitants and was visited by such luminaries as
Anthony and his mate Cleopatra. Apamea was captured by the usual suspects
from 450 AD - Persians, Muslims, Christians and then Muslims again,
but the worst and terminal damage was caused by mother nature when
an earthquake flattened the city and made it uninhabitable.
