Hama waterwheel
Syria Pictures

Apamea, Syria

Al Kaylaniyya 'noria' or waterwheel by night, Hama.

Hama is not a wildly exciting town but green and tranquil with an excellent selection of hotels and restaurants.
Much of the old town was destroyed by Syrian troops in 1982 while putting down a rebellion, but the waterwheels are spectacular, though turning only in winter, spring and summer.
The town is a good base for exploring Krak des Chevaliers, Roman Apamea, Beehive [shaped] houses, the Dead Cities and other sites, as well as being a useful stop on a drive Damascus - Aleppo.
