Photos left to right: Stockholm centre; Gamla Stan, the old quarter; Drottningholm Castle, the summer residence of the Swedish royal family.

Scandinavia's most handsome, sophisticated and liveliest city, Stockholm, offers the cleanest air in Europe due to its unique location on fourteen islands surrounded by water, with parks and gardens liberally scattered around.
This 700 year-old 'Northern Venice' has wide, calm streets lined with magnificent buildings both modern and medieval, more than seventy museums and a good selection of cafes and restaurants serving rather dull food. Everything in the city is within easy walking distance, most people speak perfect English and the summer's midnight sun makes Stockholm city a great destination for short tourist breaks or longer stays to take in a bit of the rest of Sweden, but try to avoid August's crowds, heat and rain.
