Marais Quarter Photos
Hôtel de Sens, 1519, in Marais district, Right Bank.
The Marais ( the marsh) is our second favourite area in Paris after the Latin Quarter on the opposite bank of the river. Marais is lively and attractive, with some narrow, medieval streets, a number of fine old houses, excellent little eateries and lovely cafés. This is the city's main Jewish quarter.
Museums here include Picasso, Maison de Victor Hugo, L'Histoire de France, Carnavalet (history of Paris), and Cognac-Jay.
The Place des Vosges was Paris' first planned square and is a calm, attractive space embracing Victor Hugo's home and popular with sun bathers and pram-toting mothers.
Perhaps most importantly for tourists, Marais is very conveniently located for direct access by foot to many of Paris things to do.
