If
you want to visit a traditional Gulf country this is the one. Untainted
by overdevelopement or money madness and ruled by an unusually sensible
and respected Sultan, the kingdom of Oman offers great beaches,
rocky mountains, a classic desert, isolated forts and friendly, tolerant
locals with, to date, no sniff or sight of Islamic fundamentalism or Al Quaeda.
Best Oman weather:
October-April, when it's cool (upper 20's C) and dry in most areas.
Worst: June-September. Very hot (30-40C) and humid with probable rains in
the south e.g. Salalah.
The fasting month of Ramadan can be tricky as service personnel may be fasting in the daytime and be consequently irritable, tired, distracted or not in evidence at all, so best to avoid Ramadan. 9 July-7 August 2013.
