About 4 hours drive from Namibia's unpleasant capital, Windhoek, is the relaxed, tourist friendly town of Swakopmund, built by the Germans in Bavarian style and still retaining much of that charming architecture.
The nearby dunes of the Namib desert provide a target for the country's best activities, with sandboarding, dune climbing, horse riding, quad biking, and much more, while beaches provide plenty of surf and sand - 2,000 kilometres of it in fact.
Swakopmund is also a good base for visiting Cape Cross seal colony and the Skeleton Coast, Walvis Bay flamingoes, and not ridiculously far from Damaraland and San rock art.
This is also a good transit point between Etosha's wild things and Sossusvlei's wild dunes.
