Things to Do
Museo Nacional del Prado Madrid is one of the world's best art museums and housing the best collection of Spanish art. Open 10am-8pm daily except Sundays and holidays when it's open 10am-7pm. Prado prices and more information.
Take a culture and museum walk starting
at the Columbus monument and moving through/past the city's great
museums in Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art on Paseo del Prado, including the del Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Centro de Arte
The route offers leafy boulevards and includes a huge park
and two of the city's most unusual offerings...The most spectacular
Post Office known to mankind, and the world's greatest train station
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza also on Paseo del Prado, hideous outside (behind the fountain in the photo), inside hosting a huge collection of non-Spanish art. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-7pm. Prices and more information.
The third Madrid museum in the city's Golden Triangle of Art is Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, aka Sofia, Sofia Museum or similar. Sofia houses 20th century Spanish art including some sensational pieces by Miró, Dali and Picasso, such as the huge and hugely famous Guernica. Museo Sofia is at the south end of Paseo del Prado, near Atocha station.
The 16th century Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales. This and Encarnacion
monasteries have exquisite interiors, whereas the Royal Theatre is exquisite neither inside nor outside.
Real Jardin Botanico.
Madrid's Royal Botanic Garden is an 8 hectare space conveniently near the del Prado museum, tranquil and leafily reviving after the city streets or a Prado art attack, but not of great interest. Much more attractive and unusual is ...
...the main railway station of Atocha, a bizarre and beautiful sight. And this photo taken from a sensational, reasonably priced bar!
Strolling the back streets looking for tile work, ancient and modern.
Tiles and tapas in one place. Looks like a must-lunch to us.
Or for a more pricey and genteel rest, take a drink at an upmarket outdoor café in Paseo de Recoletos. Next, more things to do in Madrid.
