Many think that the best major, free art gallery in London is the National Gallery. We prefer Tate Britain.
Sadly we also think that its sister gallery, Tate Modern, is the worst. Great space and location, pity about the permanent exhibits. The temporary exhibitions, however, for which you have to pay, can be excellent.

We were impressed by Tate Modern's pay-to-enter Miró exhibition, and regarding the permanent exhibitions it is possible that a) we were over-impatient b) we just don't like modernism.
So if you're passing by on the South Bank - which you certainly should if you're a tourist - then drop in and make up your own mind.

Here are a few photos of Tate Modern inside and out, good and bad:

Tate Modern turbine hall, London, England

The massive, ex-power station Turbine Hall. And no, that's not an optical illusion, it's a actually a gigantic trumpet. But is it art?

Tate Modern monet painting, London, England

OK, so this Monet is definitely art but the lilies look a lot better in Paris' L'Orangerie.

Tate Modern typical gallery, London, England

A comfortable space with accessible though modest art forms.

Tate Modern pricey picasso, London, England

This discreetly hung Picasso has got to be worth a look, since it's currently the most expensive painting in the world, bought by a Georgian for $108 million and kindly lent to the Tate. Nude, Green Leaves and Bust features Pablo's girlfriend Marie-Therese Walter in 1932, unknown to his long-suffering wife.

Tate Modern thames view, London, England

The views over the Millennium Bridge and the Thames to St Paul's Cathedral are worth the visit and the café serves an excellent fudge cake! Next, Tate Modern rubbish
