The dirty bottom of Lisbon, the Alfama district.

The narrow twisting lanes and tatty houses of the Alfama district contrast strongly with the wider streets and more elegant structures across the Baixa valley in Bairro Alto. That's not to say the area is without interest. At the top of the hill is the city's best viewpoint, the castle of Sao Jorge, the monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora contains amazing azulejos, and various churches - including the dull cathedral are scattered around the hillside.
Come nightfall and the sad sound of Fado attracts tourists to the area, though they often end up in a tourist trap and not in a genuine Fado club.
Alfama at night is also possibly the least safe area to stroll around...
