Bodyboarding on the North Shore in winter, November to February.
Bugbog's experience of bodyboarding on the North Shore in winter was quite eye-opening...
The very first wave snapped the bodyboard into two pieces (admittedly it was a cheapo polystyrene job). After that it was down to near-death bodysurfing (no board rentals nearby) and returning home with sand-rash, tinnitus and three months of treatment to get water out of the ear canals!
Don't take this surf lightly, howlie surfers die in Hawaiian surf every year and we're not the least bit surprised. Almost been there.

Waimea Bay is the mecca of big wave surfing during the winter. More information.
Waimea Bay hosts the world's biggest surf competition, the Quicksilver as well as other more traditional surfing events. The Quicksilver only takes place when waves reach a minimum height of 20 ft, with 30ft face heights. In 24 years the Quicksilver has taken place 8 times.

But in the summer from May to September the ocean becomes remarkably relaxing along the North Shore with plenty of space for sunbathing and swimming, though get there early if you wish to park in the not very large Waimea Bay parking lot. .

North Shore has 7 miles of sand for bodyslothing, just one hour's drive from Waikiki. But there are other things to do in Oahu apart from beach-going!
The nearest cheap North Shore accommodation is mainly in the small, quiet and pretty town of Haleiwa, 'culture hub' of this part of Oahu, but condo rentals and luxury beach resorts can also be found scattered along the North Shore.
