Honolulu Things to Do

Honolulu - meaning Sheltered Harbour - is the starting line for most Hawaii tourism thanks to its international airport just 20 minutes away and acts as a good base for Oahu island exploration, with a large variety of accommodation possibilities - hotels, hostels, condo rentals and beach resorts. Then there's world famous Waikiki Beach, superb shopping and dining and a great network of roads and highways enabling easy access to Oahu's non-city delights.

Waikiki Beach is Honolulu's main attraction even if it is dominated by luxury hotels. It's a great place for people watching, lazing on fine sand, strolling, paddling (there are surf-safe areas for toddlers), learning to surf and actually surfing if surf's up, but over-crowded. There are two other beaches in Honolulu, Kuhio and huge Ala Moana Beach and Park. Waikiki Pictures and information.

Pearl Harbor probably comes second on a list of things to do in Honolulu, particularly for Americans. See the USS Arizona Memorial, explore the USS Missouri battleship and visit the Pacific Submarine Museum. More Pearl Harbor.

Diamond Head State Monument. A short distance away from Honolulu's concrete jungle is the dramatic viewpoint of Diamond Head (alt. 230m) that can be reached by a short bus, car or taxi ride or a pleasant hike. More Diamond Head.

2 ugly condo buildings in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

One Waterfront Tower, Honolulu, kind of a strange name as there are two of them. And anyway, who's idea of good, environmentally appropriate design was that?

One Waterfront Tower are two 45-story, luxury condominium buildings located across from Honolulu Harbor, Aloha Tower shopping center and a short distance from Waikiki beaches, shopping, entertainment and downtown Honolulu. Convenient? Yes. Comfortable accommodation? Yes. In character with Hawaii? No. Ugly as sin? We think so.

Chinatown, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

Ah, that's more like it - discreet, tropical cool in Chinatown's gateway Plaza, though there are question marks about the safety of walking Chinatown's streets after dark.

The Iolani Palace is the only royal structure remaining on American soil and was finished in 1882. This is a well-preserved National Historic Landmark, home to the last two Hawai monarchs, full of relics and history of the Hawaiian Islands. It's in downtown Honolulu, easily accessible by bus from Waikiki, popular with tourists and open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, but children under 5 are not permitted.
Tours leave every half hour and are pricey but offer a fascinating picture of amazingly sophisticated Hawaiian royal life 120 years ago.

Other things to do in Honolulu - apart from beaches - are:
- Aloha Tower, an old tower completed in 1926 that offers spectacular views over part of the city and harbor from a public observation deck. It's free and open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Hawaii State Art Museum, displaying fine works by local artists in a wonderfully renovated historic building. It's free and open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
- Shopping is, of course, one of the things to do in Hi and considered priority #1 by the island's Asian tourists!
