Luxor is one of the country's two must-sees, fighting for top slot against the Pyramids of Giza. Once known as Thebes, capital of ancient Egypt, it is a town of two halves bisected by the grand old River Nile, though most of the urban activities - main transport, hotels, restaurants and shops - happen on the east bank.
