Ancient Egypt attractions are legendary, all the way from Cairo's great pyramids down through the desert past the original smaller pyramids at Saqquara, alongside the Nile, pausing momentarily at monumental Edfu temple, passing aeons of time around the magnificent ancient relics of Luxor and then moving on to tranquil Aswan for some felucca sailing and a brief shufti at Abu Simbel.

And the pace doesn't let up there...it's then over to the Red Sea to the overdeveloped west coast resorts like Hurghada, or across the water to visit Sinai desert Bedouin, or touristy, charm-free but comfortable Sharm el Sheikh, neo-hippy dippy Dahab or one of the newer resorts for warm water sports.

Local people are friendly and entertaining if you get a chance to relax with them while Cairo's shopping is incredible - though you have to learn to haggle.

The history of Ancient Egypt is staggering, the sky is almost always blue, deserts surround everything, scuba and snorkelling in the Red Sea are world class, and Egypt's not expensive. What's not to like? (Well, the hustlers for one thing. And the flies...)
