Brighton's
white trash Palace Pier and pebbly beach, East Sussex.
Brighton,
on England's south east coast, is the favourite resort of Londoners
- particularly gays but enjoyed by straights too - as it's stylish,
boisterous, fully-oxygenated and the nearest beach resort to
London.
Depending
on reliability of trains or traffic congestion the trip should
take less than two hours by frequent trains, coaches [comfortable,
long-distance buses] or rental car.
Once in the town centre transport is hardly necessary as most
of the action is in the compact centre, just a block or two
north of the four-mile beach, its promenade and its gloriously
shapely but tackily furnished Palace Pier.
The narrow and labyrinthine The Lanes area is Brighton's
wildlife watering-hole while North Laine is the grazing
ground for interesting, arty shops, boutiques and coffee-houses.
Also
in England's south east is another popular, eminent attraction,
Canterbury, a 1,000 year-old city
built on the bones of Christianity [and as mentioned in Chaucer's
Canterbury Tales]. The city centre offers medieval
walls, a variety of ruins, a cluster of museums and some charming
ancient housing but most notably the massive Canterbury Cathedral
- site of the infamous murder of Archbishop Thomas à
Becket in 1170 - with it's kaleidoscopic stained glass and king's
tombs.
The town is calm, user-friendly and easily accessible from London
by train, coach or car.
