Hiking

A
view of the ever-expanding Corte suburbs from the citadel's
Belvedere platform.
Corte's
old centre, otherwise known as ville haute, is small
and - apart from the Genoese citadel - fairly uncared for but
has a pleasant ambience, some good restaurants and give great
access to many of Corsica's best hiking trails, though you will
still need a vehicle to reach the Restonica Gorge.

300
year old Genoese bullet holes still visible on the house of
nationalist General Gian Pietru Gaffori. The small square here
and statue are named after Gaffori.

A
favoured, good value and evocative Corte old town restaurant.
[OK...we forgot its name].

The
tiny, winding mountain road into the Restonica Gorge.
The
Foret de la Restonica around here is another popular
walking, picnicking and bathing area, especially adjacent to
the River Restonica and its pools and cascades embraced by pines
and chestnut trees.
A
totally ravishing drive into the Gorges de la Restonica 15kms
[10 miles] from Corte and the only way to the car park at Bergeries
de Grotelle from where some magnificent hikes begin, this little
D936 road is also the busiest mountain road on the island and
since it often narrows to one lane with rock face on one side
and big unprotected drop on the other travelling it in summer
can be a very slow and anxious experience.

An
unusually straight bit of the Restonica D936 road.
Rule number one is don't take a wide car up there unless you
have nerves of steel, though we have seen small motor homes
doing the trip.
Rule number two is, in the summer season, head out there early
so at least the traffic is going just one way. Once some early
birds start coming back difficulties multiply exponentially.
Furthermore, parking at Bergeries and along the route is limited
[perhaps 100 cars at Bergeries?]. It would not be a happy ending
to struggle all the way there only to find no parking!
Alternatively abandon the car and grab the good value minibus
from Corte to Bergeries and let a professional take the strain.
Or hitch hike. Click the pic for more
hiking images and information on the next page.
