Corsica west coast road picture

A west coast view en route from Calvi to Porto.

Corsica road information:

East coast roads in Corsica run relatively straight and flat so the trip from north to south can take under three hours.
The west coast is a different story as tired little roads wind around rocky bends endlessly with not much between the car and a big drop except for a speeding Golf GTi.
Without France's draconian speed limiting hardware on this island there are quite a few youths happily thrashing Peugots and middle-aged delivery men hurling white vans around tight bends in an unhinged fashion. Ajaccio is the exception where there are no rock bends and traffic is so steamed up that no one goes anywhere at speed.

Wheels meet again on the road to Calvi [November].

If you plan to sit on a nearby beach for your stay or intend to walk a lot then self-drive may not be necessary. However, more isolated and romantic beaches will certainly require wheels to reach, while getting to good hiking trails [without having to walk to the start too] also calls for transport.
Buses are available on Corsica and perform long-distance duties well, but for those little individual excursions, wheels meet again.

Porto photo corsica

Porto, a little west coast resort town.

Porto is just about the most difficult town to reach on the island though there is a marginally faster route via Corte - still wiggly but wider and in better shape.
However Porto offers good access to not only a couple of OK beaches but also boat trips to the Marine Nature Reserve of Scandola [no hiking permitted here], great drives [if the vehicle density is no too bad] and exquisite walks through Calanches de Piana down the coast, or travel inland to the Gorges de Spelunca and the Aitone Forest, a place not only packed with trees but also rivers and pools that offer perfect swimming opportunities in the summer.

A typical red rock road a little south of Porto, just before the Calanches de Piana; see the next page for more images of the fabulous Calanches.
