Thessaloniki

Greece's second city, Thessaloniki, is quite different from Athens. The streets are better organised and in much better shape, as are the people - in better shape that is. Thessalonikians are famously sophisticated and fashion conscious, and the shops reflect that, as well as the bars, restaurants and clubs, but this is not a real tourist town as sights are in short supply and - unlike Athens' Plaka - there is no easy-to-find tourist focus.
The main sights are the white tower, visible in the picture, several excellent Byzantine churches, a couple of museums, the tiny but interesting Arch of Galerius and Kastra, the old Turkish quarter. A mere morning's work for a serious traveller en route to Halkidiki!
