Camping is a major part of French holidays due to the massive demand for accommodation in the summer months and the limited supply, not to mention the low-cost factor.

Camp sites are to be found just about everywhere, beside beaches, mountains, lakes, rivers and interesting towns, many with sophisticated facilities including heated swimming pools, washing machines, a shop and sports facilities.
The Fédération Française de Camping et Caravaning (in French) grade sites from one to four stars, one being very basic, and recently a new term - Camping de Qualité - has been introduced to indicate sites that have especially high standards.

If you're going to do a lot of camping then an International Camping Card will get you discounts at many sites and provides third party insurance.
Officially you're not supposed to camp on public land, though many do - discretely, but don't try it on private property.
