Mosteiro
dos Jeronimos
The
famous Manueline cloister of the Jeronimos monastery - a prime target
for any serious Lisbon tourists.
Built as a memorial to Prince Henry the Navigator and Vasco da Gama's
great seafaring discoveries, the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos was completed
at the end of the 16th century and housed monks whose main duties
were to pray for and give spiritual guidance to sailors and the king
- who paid for it with taxes on Portugal's spice trade.
The detailed Manueline workmanship in the cloister is staggering and
easy to see, as opposed to the equally elaborate south door to the
monastery which is well out of reach. The main church is simpler but
still impressive and contains da Gama's body.
The monastery is in Belem district, near the river, the Torre
de Belem, the Discoveries
Monument and various museums.
