Umhlanga
Rocks, a kind of beach suburb 14 kms up the coast from Durban is where
much of the old money has fled and is sometimes suggested as an alternative
to tourist life in Durban. Unfortunately the old money has built right
up onto the beach most of the way along, so unless you're staying
in an expensive hotel or apartment that is on the beach,
you'll find it difficult to get onto the sand, and once you're there
the essentials - cold beer and burgers - are not easy to find.
But... excellent massive beach, lifeguards and surf, and safe streets.
