Praia de Sao Sebastiao, near Ericeira.

A prime target for surfers, Ericeira's beaches are about half way up Portugal's west coast, 80 minutes by bus from Lisbon.
The town itself was a cute little seaside resort until quite recently. Now row upon row of brand new houses on brand new estates encircle the old town and new residents threaten to overrun the facilities, including the sandy bays that created Ericeira's fresh and relaxed ambience.
Some of the bays are protected enough to restrain the Atlantic's rolling thunder, but mostly they are beaten flat by relentless surf, including the World Championship beach of Ribeira de Ilhas (4kms north of Ericeira). This one, Sao Sebastiao, is only a couple of kms out of town, undeveloped and popular with all but the most demanding surfers.
