Mai Khao is a 13km monster of a beach clearly visible when your plane
lands at Phuket airport. Only two sections offer any facilities, both
towards the north end where the superb main road passes nearby. One
is a cluster of restaurants/bars visible from the road and mainly
aimed at Thais, the other is a small bungalow complex under palm trees
run by a friendly family. Four fan cooled rooms run to 600 baht [£10]
a day, not very competitive with Kamala beach, but if you like to
have a gigantic run of sand to yourselves this can't be beat.
There are also micro bungalows at 300 baht that a dog would be happy
in, but a human...?
The sand is coarse and yellow, and shelves fairly steeply, while the
usual waves were kicking up trouble in December.
Nov-Jan is supposed to be turtle egg-laying season on this beach,
but the turtles couldn't get through the waves at that time.
