Paradis and Bel Ombre Beaches
beach in winter (June-August).
Probably Mauritius' best beach, Paradis is enrobed with supremely soft sand and inviting,
calm water. It's more-or-less occupied by the supreme
luxury of the Paradis hotel in the far southwest of Mauritius. With a cool, ethnic/designer style, stunning
environment of talc sand, manicured lawns, rocky mountain backdrop,
golf course and perfectly balanced chic informality this
is the place to stay if you have a very fat wallet.

beach is one of the more difficult beaches to get onto if you are
not staying there as one side is lined with other beach resorts while
the other is a long, narrow lagoon strand, so you've got a serious
walk to get into Paradis.
Mauritius not only embraces first and second class hotels, but also holiday rental homes (best for larger numbers of guests) and low cost B&Bs in pretty good locations including many on Rodrigues Island 560 kms (348 miles) east of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

The Movenpick may be a first class hotel but there have been question marks about the service levels and the beach is certainly inferior to Paradis or Trou aux Biches. The sand is narrow, the waters scattered with rocks and any strolling to either end of the beach in bare feet will end in tears as casuarina trees drop pointy pods everywhere.
However, it's not far from the airport and embedded in Bel Ombre Nature Reserve, with masses of free activities ranging from pools (of course), tennis, volleyball, kayaking, windsurfing, snorkeling and more. Spas, 18 hole golf course, scuba diving and other sports are available for a modest fee.

There are several other first class beach hotels in Bel Ombre with better recommendations than this one, such as the Sofitel So Mauritius, and more in other regions of Mauritius. The most highly recommended top class hotel on the island recently is the Four Seasons at Anahita beside a lagoon on the unspoiled but wetter east coast.
